In order to avoid obsolescence a wide variety of specific and detailed actions can be taken at all stages of product development and production to minimize life cycle costs.

Mitigation of obsolescence can be accomplished through actions in planning, programming, design, construction, operations, maintenance, renewal or reuse of a system (throughout the whole systems’ life cycle). To be able to act effectively on obsolescence issues it is necessary to prepare detailed process studies about reactive, proactive and strategic obsolescence management solutions used.

Methods to prepare a successful process study are for example:

  • Determining a process from start to finish
  • Rough presentation in a few process steps
  • Implementation of particular process steps
  • Determining essential inputs, suppliers and outputs
  • Presentation of key customers as recipients of essential outputs

Mitigation and Management of Product Obsolescence”

Implementing a detailed process study will lead to a structured obsolescence management plan. In addition, other results which will be achieved are a unified understanding of the processes, the illustration of the differences between reactive, proactive and strategic management and the identification of essential process customers (users).
