The VDI (Association of German Engineers) - corporation Production and Logistics - has founded a new expert committee "Obsolescence Management" (FA209) within their department Factory Planning and Operation (FB2). The constitutive meeting took place at the VDI location in Duesseldorf on the 22. August 2012.

Many companies are facing the problem that due to discontinuation many required parts are not manufactured and delivered anymore. The availability of parts over the life cycle of products is to be included into all considerations. Obsolescence management can be seen as a part of risk management. Implemented correctly, obsolescence management can reduce or prevent production and service failure caused by unavailable processes, materials, software, production facilities, lost knowhow or etc..

Objective of the guideline FA209, which is to be developed, shall be the creation of one (or several) concepts of the acquisition of replacement parts of products and components that are (or will be) older than 10/20/30 years. Participants of the committee are universities, research institutes, manufacturers, fabricators, insurance companies, operators, authorized experts, etc...

Chairman of the expert committee is MIB Ind.-Eng. Bjoern Bartels, Senior Consultant and Obsolescence Management Lead at ABSC GmbH in Aschheim-Dornach, Germany.
