Managing the effects of obsolescence whole life cost of offshore oil and gas industry: a case study of software obsolescence

This thesis focuses on how on-going energy demand, shift in water depth and heavy crude oil type are creating huge obsolescence issues especially software in the offshore oil and gas industry.
The aim is to identify and evaluate software obsolescence using a novel framework developed via a roadmap excel tool to identify major software types, associated impact and risk exposure, cost implications, and resolution qualification. Furthermore, through validation it was realised that the framework offers life cycle support and guidance related to software obsolescence. The tool can be used at the bidding stage of engineering and procurement contracts thereby reducing capital and operating expenditure.
