An obsolescence management audit is about revealing strengths and weaknesses within an organisation and to quantify them.

The audit is conducted by collecting data in collaboration with the respective managers as well as through observations of employees and analysis of processes. The written and graphical study evaluation should be developed including the collection of detailed information, historical data, statistics, processes and other documents used.

An obsolescence management audit should contain at least some of the following tasks:

  • Detail- and process studies of reactive, proactive and strategic obsolescence management as well as a definition of the people involved
  • Illustration of the cost for the elimination of obsolescence cases
  • Illustration of the required time for the elimination of obsolescence cases
  • Illustration of critical product designs and selection of parts as well as stating the alternatives
  • Illustration of ambiguity of the part identifications in the bill of materials
  • Obsolescence management on system level above the piece part level
  • Supplier and customer management as well as drafting of contracts

Some examples of obsolescence management audit and implementation models are described here.
